  • Queen's South Africa Medal issued to 9179 Tpr Walter Edward Jones, 10th NZMR Contingent. Jones sailed with the 10th NZMR Contingent on the S.S. Norfolk, arriving just a few days before the end of war. He qualified for the clasp 'South Africa 1902' only.

     

    Walter Jones was born circa 1871 in New South Wales, Australia. Son of George and Mary Jones (née Cloughton). He was working as a labourer at Fairfeild near Ashburton when he enlisted in 1902. Jones married Mabel Louisa Parkin in 1904 and had a family of two children. Whilst working at the Fairfield Freezing Works on 27 December 1910, Jones fell down an open manhold and was killed. He is buried in the Ashburton Cemetery.
