Charles Mancey was a first day Gallipoli lander, serving with the Otago Infantry Battalion. He was evacuated to Egypt in late July 1915 suffering from boils. On recovery he was attached to No. 1 Stationary Hospital and embarked on the H.T. Marquette in October 1915. On the morning of 23rd October the ship was struck by a torpedo fired from a German U-Boat, and sank with the loss of 167 lives, including 32 members of the NZEF. Mancey was one of the lucky ones, rescued from the water and taken to Salonika. He was subsequently classified as medically unfit further service and returned to New Zealand in 1916.
