  • The 1914/15 Star trio awarded to 7/1330 Trooper David Bain who was badly wounded at the Battle of Rafa in January 1917.

David Bain was born 30th April 1889 at Temuka, New Zealand. Son of Peter and Isabella Marion Bain (née MacKinnon). He grew up on the family farm, "The Stumps" located between Temuka and Orari and was working on the farm when he enlisted for service with the NZEF in 1915. Bain embarked with the 7th Reinforcements, Canterbury Mounted Rifles and saw service throughout 1916 with 8th (South Canterbury) Squadron, Egyptian Expeditionary Force.

During the Battle of Rafa on 9th January 1917, Bain suffered a severe gunshot wound through the right thigh and buttock. Despite the wound eventually healing, Bain suffered from continual pain and weakness in the right leg and in June 1917 he was medically boarded and sent back to New Zealand for discharge.

On his return to New Zealand, Bain married Irene Dorothy Wareing and had a family of five children. He died on 15th June 1962 at Napier.

All medals are correctly impressed 7/1330 TPR. D. BAIN. N.Z.E.F. The British War Medal has an edge knock on the first '3' of the service number. The 1914/15 Star is guaranteed correctly named, but is unable to photographed as it is wired down.
