    John Walsh was a farmer from Piripiri, north of Dannevirke. Information on Walsh's service career is summarised as follows:

    NZG 24/25: 7th Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles.
    To be 2nd Lieutenant. Dated 26th March, 1925 :- John Walsh.

    NZGO 1928/345: 7th Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles.
    2/Lt. J. WALSH to be Lieutenant. Dated 14th September, 1927. (Gaz. 57 / 28.)

    NZGO 43/1932: The Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles.
    The undermentioned Lieutenants to be Captains: J. WALSH. Dated 1st October, 1931

    Major J.P. WALSH, E.D., is posted to the Reserve of Officers Supplementary List. Dated 23rd August, 1943.

     

    NZAO 1951/358: Major J.P. WALSH, E.D., from the Reserve of Officer’s, Supplementary List, to be Major, with Seniority from 1st May 1946, Dated 1 May 1949. [The Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps]

    NZAO 1952/411:
    Maj JP WALSH ED is posted to the Retired List, dated 24 Nov 1952.

     

    He died 3rd June 1969 and is buried at Mangatera Cemetery, Dannevirke.

     

    The Efficiency Decoration (GVI Type 1) is correctly chisel engraved to MAJ. J. P. WALSH, W.E.C.M.R. and the NZ Territorial Service Medal is correctly impressed to CAPT. J. WALSH, W.E.C.M.R. Walsh's ED was promulgated in NZAO 1943/37 and the TSM was promulgated in NZGO 1936/239. The ED comes in the original Royal Mint case of issue, named on the reverse to Major Walsh.
