  • The British War Medal issued to the next-of-kin of 4/2146 Sapper Robert Marshall Syme, who was killed on 25th October 1918 probably by German artillery during bridging operations in the vicinity of Pont a Pierres, on the approaches to Le Quesnoy.

     

    Robert Syme was born 15th September 1875 at Auckland, New Zealand. Son of William Graham and Agnes Inglis Syme (née Murdoch). At the time of his enlistment  in 1915 he was working as a builder in Taihape. Syme embarked with the 11th Reinforcements, and served on the Western Front with No. 3 Field Company from May 1916. He saw continuous service until his death in October 1918. He is buried in Beaudignies Communal Cemetery.
