  • The WW2 campaign and Efficiency Medal group awarded to Cpl Norman Leslie McGinn, who served with D Company, 28th (Maori) Battalion.

Note: McGinn's service file has not been obtained, so details on his service are not confirmed. Norman McGinn was born 6th October 1908 in Christchurch, New Zealand. He married Charlotte Frances Margaret Clack in 1934, but at the time of his enlistment in 1940, they appear to have been separated. McGinn is listed as embarking on Nominal Roll 3 - which covers the period 1 July 1940 - 31 March 1941 - with 30th Battery, 6th Field Troop, NZ Field Artillery. This unit operated 25-pounders during the Western Desert campaign. It is presumed McGinn transferred to the 28th (Maori) Battalion, as he is listed on the battalion website. His service file will contain the specific details.

McGinn was awarded the Efficiency Medal in 1950 (per AO1950/329). He died 27th December 1960 and is buried in the Old Levin Cemetery. Note, his services plaque has the post-nominal of 'ED' suggesting he was awarded the Efficiency Decoration. This is incorrect as he is confirmed as only receiving the Efficiency Medal or 'EM'.

The GVI (Type 1) EM with 'NEW ZEALAND' bar is correctly impressed CPL. N.L. McGINN. 2 N.Z.E.F.

Note: McGinn is listed as not claiming or receiving his WW2 campaign medals, therefore the medals shown here have been added. They are nice, original medals and superior to the modern versions being issued today, if they were to be formally claimed.
