  • The 1914/15 Star, Victory Medal and Memorial Plaque issued to the next-of-kin of Arthur Hunter, Auckland Infantry Battalion, who was killed in action on 8th August 1915 during the desperate Battle of Chunuk Bair.

Arthur Hunter was born 15th December 1890 at Mintlaw, Scotland. Son of Arthur and Barbara Hunter (née Horne). At the time of his enlistment in the NZEF in December 1914 he was working as a carpenter at Pukeatua. It appears he was initially posted to the NZ Field Artillery (his photo shows him wearing the NZFA hat badge) before transferring to the Auckland Infantry Battalion with the number 12/1675A. This was later amended back to 12/1675. Hunter embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements and landed on Gallipoli in June 1915. He was killed in action on 8th August 1915. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Chunuk Bair (New Zealand) Memorial.

The medals are correctly impressed 12/1675 PTE. A. HUNTER. N.Z.E.F. and the Memorial Plaque is correctly embossed ARTHUR HUNTER. The whereabouts of the British War Medal is unknown.
